BMW has been on an absolute tear lately, and the new i5 M60 might be their most compelling electric car yet. Forget everything you thought you knew about electric BMWs — this one is different.

Under the skin sits BMW's fifth-generation eDrive technology with a dual-motor setup producing 601 horsepower and 586 lb-ft of torque. That's enough to catapult this 5,200-pound luxury sedan from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds.

The 105.7 kWh battery pack enables a claimed 385-mile range. Real-world range should be around 340-350 miles. DC fast charging at up to 205 kW can add 95 miles of range in just 10 minutes.

BMW's decision to keep the kidney grille at a reasonable size deserves applause. The i5 M60 looks like a proper BMW sedan — muscular haunches, a purposeful stance, and subtle M-specific aerodynamic elements.

The interior is peak modern BMW. The curved display spanning from the 12.3-inch instrument cluster to the 14.9-inch infotainment screen is gorgeous. The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround system is worth every penny of the $3,400 option price.

Driving dynamics are where the i5 M60 truly shines. The adaptive M suspension keeps the body flat through corners while providing a supple ride during normal driving. The rear-biased torque distribution gives the car a playful character in Sport mode.

Additionally, BMW has integrated Highway Assistant for hands-free driving at speeds up to 80 mph on mapped highways. It works remarkably well — smooth lane changes, confident merging, and none of the jerky corrections you get with some competitors.

At $84,100 to start, the i5 M60 isn't cheap. However, it undercuts the Mercedes-AMG EQE by nearly $10,000 while offering more power and range. For the executive who wants electric performance without compromise, this is the car to buy.
