The Tesla Model Y has been the best-selling car on the planet for two years running. Not best-selling EV — best-selling car, period. So when Tesla finally gave it the refresh treatment, the automotive world paid attention.
Codenamed "Juniper," the 2026 Model Y arrives with a sleeker front fascia that ditches the somewhat bland look of the original for something with actual character. The new light bar stretching across the front gives it a more premium, Cybertruck-influenced look. Love it or hate it, you can't ignore it.
The interior is where the real magic happens. Tesla has finally — FINALLY — added ambient lighting. The new 15.4-inch center screen is faster and more responsive. But the headline feature is the rear passenger screen, an 8-inch touchscreen for backseat entertainment that makes long road trips infinitely more bearable.
Range has improved across the board. The Long Range AWD model now delivers 325 miles on a full charge, up from 310 in the previous generation. More importantly, real-world efficiency has improved thanks to better heat pump management and reduced aerodynamic drag.
However, build quality remains a mixed bag. Our test car had panel gaps that were mostly tight, but the right rear door was noticeably off. Tesla has improved dramatically from the early days, but they're still not matching the fit and finish of a BMW iX or Mercedes EQB.
The driving experience is quintessentially Tesla. Instant torque, silent acceleration, and that eerie sense of speed that comes with having no engine noise as reference. The new suspension tuning is slightly softer, which improves daily comfort without sacrificing cornering confidence.
Autopilot continues to be class-leading, though Full Self-Driving remains a work in progress. The new hardware suite processes data faster, making phantom braking incidents noticeably less frequent.
At $44,990 for the base model, the Juniper Model Y remains the electric crossover to beat. It's not perfect — no car is — but it offers the best combination of range, technology, space, and charging infrastructure in its class.
